Statistics, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Genetics, Public Health, Pediatrics, Medicine, Psychiatry, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Signal Processing, Econometrics, Business. I have listed a series of English words. These are words that appeared in the department or graduate school affiliations of authors in a recent issue of the *Journal of the American Statistical Association*. Some of the actual department names consist of just one of these words, while others are combinations, such as Mathematics and Statistics. While department names do not necessarily represent the full content of the papers, they offer a glimpse into the fields where statistics is potentially applied. In reality, statistics is used in many more fields, and it is safe to say, "Where there is data, there is statistics." The scope of statistics is indeed very broad.
Incidentally, I belong to the Department of Mathematics, where students choose between a Major in Mathematics and a Major in Statistics. This Major in Statistics is quite unique in Japan, so I encourage you to use other resources to learn more about its curriculum. As for myself, I have conducted research on statistical modeling for the analysis of consumer purchasing behavior data and rainfall intensity data, as well as on statistical distribution theory useful for risk theory in actuarial science. Recently, I have been focusing on the statistical analysis of directional data, such as wind direction. This is a field with potential applications in environmental science and biostatistics.
