Kenji Yasuoka, Dean, Graduate School of Science and Technology

We would like to express our sincere gratitude for your exceptional and ongoing support in the recruitment of graduates from the Keio University Faculty of Science and Technology and the Graduate School of Science and Technology. There is no doubt that we are in an era of rapid digitalization, which is making people's lives more convenient and prosperous. Recently, with the rapid advancement of AI technologies, including generative AI, how to best utilize these latest innovations has become a societal challenge, particularly from the perspectives of safety and security. At the same time, it is also true that various conflicts persist, and not all aspects of the global situation are necessarily moving toward stable development. Furthermore, while the demands for carbon neutrality and SDGs are undeniably driven by strong social and political factors, the frequency of extreme weather and natural disasters makes us keenly aware of the need for proactive responses in the field of science and technology, including disaster prevention and prediction. In this social climate, the advancement of science and technology is becoming increasingly crucial across various fields, and we believe that the education provided by the Faculty of Science and Technology will be more important than ever for the future.

At the Keio University Faculty of Science and Technology, students do not choose a specific department upon admission. Instead, they begin their studies in one of five academic clusters, a framework introduced in 2020, where they receive a common foundational education in preparation for their future specialized studies. Upon advancing to their second year, students are assigned to one of eleven departments, where they deepen their expertise through specialized curricula unique to each department before undertaking a graduation research project in their fourth year. Each year, approximately 1,000 students graduate from the Faculty of Science and Technology, with over 70% of them advancing to master's programs. In graduate school, students enroll in one of three schools—the School of Fundamental Science and Technology, the School of Integrated Design Engineering, or the School of Science for Open and Environmental Systems—and engage in cutting-edge research under the guidance of an academic advisor within a flexible educational and research framework that transcends specialized fields. In this way, the Keio University Faculty of Science and Technology and Graduate School of Science and Technology provide students with opportunities to choose their own paths at various stages, from undergraduate admission to graduate studies, based on the knowledge and experience they have acquired. This unique educational system fosters individuals who have acquired specialized knowledge grounded in a solid foundation and possess the ability to view matters from an interdisciplinary perspective. In recent years, the AI and Advanced Programming Consortium (AIC) was established, providing a platform for students' self-directed learning, including collaborations with companies through AI. While many participants are from the Faculty of Science and Technology or the Graduate School of Science and Technology due to the focus on programming, there are also numerous participants from the Faculty of Economics, the Faculty of Law, and the Faculty of Business and Commerce, promising the development of new talent through inter-faculty learning and collaboration.

In response to rapid globalization, we are also focused on cultivating globally-minded talent capable of playing central roles in various fields on the world stage after graduating from our undergraduate or graduate programs. The Keio University Faculty of Science and Technology and Graduate School of Science and Technology are expanding programs aimed at fostering world-class international talent. These include offering Global Leadership Seminars for first- and second-year undergraduate students, providing opportunities for short-term study abroad and overseas internships through the introduction of a quarter system in the departmental specialized curriculum, and enabling students to earn degrees from overseas universities through double degree programs in our master's programs. With the establishment of the Keio ST Global Fund in April 2015, we have further enhanced the financial resources available to support students' activities abroad, with the future goal of enabling all students of the Faculty of Science and Technology to participate in these international programs in some form. We are also actively working to attract outstanding international students. For example, at the graduate level, we have established the International Graduate Program for Advanced Science and Technology, where students can earn a degree by taking courses in English. Furthermore, by partnering with overseas universities, mainly in Europe, for double degree programs, we have seen a significant increase in the number of international students enrolled in the Graduate School of Science and Technology, which has advanced the internationalization of our campus.

Regarding career support, which is vital for contributing the results of our research and education to society, we have been fortunate to receive numerous job offers regardless of the economic climate. However, we are not complacent and conduct annual reviews of our services. For details, please refer to the separate guide. We will continue our efforts to cultivate and send out into the world students who possess specialized knowledge in science and technology and can flexibly adapt to the globalization and diversification of the social environment. We sincerely ask for your continued support and cooperation.

About University Recommendation Job Postings

Overview of the University Recommendation System

University recommendation is a system in which the university guarantees that a student is applying to a company as their first choice. Based on the student's preference, the recommendation is decided by a career placement committee member, and a letter of recommendation is issued in the name of the President and the Dean of the Faculty or the Chair of the Graduate School. Students who receive a university recommendation commit to prioritizing employment with the company above all other career paths, and we ask that they be given preferential and smooth consideration in the selection process. For students, this system has advantages such as allowing them to complete their job search in a shorter period compared to open applications and to focus on their research. This system is supported by a relationship of trust between companies and the university. To maintain this trust, the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Graduate School of Science and Technology operate this system strictly and in good faith.

Formats for Company Recruitment Activities

Companies are asked to select one of the following formats for each "kei" (*1): "University Recommendation Only," "Open Application Only," or "Both University Recommendation and Open Application." (*2) At the start of the selection process, students confirm the company's application format before applying. For companies designated as "University Recommendation Only," students can only apply through university recommendation; open application is not an option. For companies designated as "Open Application Only," students cannot apply through university recommendation. On the other hand, when applying to companies designated as "Both University Recommendation and Open Application," students can choose either method based on their preference. As a general rule, students are not permitted to change their chosen application method in the middle of the selection process. (*3)

*1: "Kei" is a term used for job-seeking purposes that refers to a field integrating an undergraduate department and its corresponding graduate school program. For undergraduate students, it corresponds to their department; for graduate students, it corresponds to the department of their academic advisor. Career support is provided for each "kei" for both undergraduate and graduate students. The career placement committee member for each "kei" serves as the point of contact for companies. Please note that the department to which a student's academic advisor belongs (the "kei" for career support) is listed in the Faculty of Science and Technology Faculty Profiles.

*2: University recommendation slots can be set for each "kei," by job type, and separately for undergraduate and graduate students.

*3: However, after a company has completely finished recruiting through one application format (i.e., after the results for all applicants under the initial format have been determined), it is possible to change the format for additional recruitment.

Release Date for University Recommendation Job Postings

University recommendation job postings are made available to students from March 1, following a prior agreement between the company and the career placement committee member of each "kei." For this reason, recruitment activities before February are generally handled as open applications. For the prior agreement procedure, please refer to "How to Apply for University Recommendation Job Postings."

Timing of Student Recommendation Decisions

The university conducts a Career Preference Survey for students seeking a school recommendation around mid-May. Following this survey, the students to be recommended to each company are determined.

Issuance of School Recommendation Letters

School recommendation letters are issued from July onward under the names of the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology (and Dean of the Graduate School of Science and Technology) and the President of the university. These letters are provided exclusively for 'School Recommendation' job openings for which the prescribed application procedures of the Keio University Faculty of Science and Technology have been completed. Please note that we cannot issue these letters for 'Open Application' job openings.

How to Apply for School Recommendation Job Postings

Companies wishing to post a school recommendation job opening are required to complete the prescribed application procedures. If these procedures have not been completed, we will be unable to introduce the opening to students as a school recommendation. To request details on the application procedures, please refer to the "Contact Information" section on this page.
