Understanding “Universality” and “Emergence” to Unravel Everything from Elementary Particles to the Universe and Social Phenomena
The pursuit of the common physical laws governing natural phenomena—universality—is one of the goals of physics. Meanwhile, the concept of emergence, where entirely new properties arise from the collective behavior of a material’s various “layers,” such as in superconductivity, which cannot be predicted from the behavior of individual electrons, is a principle shared by life sciences and social sciences as well. Understanding these concepts of “universality” and “emergence” will serve as a solid foundation for any scientific or technological field that students pursue.
