Komei Sugiura Laboratory, Department of Information and Computer Science, Faculty of Science and Technology, Keio University: Research Integrating the Theory and Application of Machine Intelligence for Handling Real-World Knowledge

The Komei Sugiura Laboratory at the Department of Information and Computer Science, Faculty of Science and Technology, Keio University, conducts research that merges theory and application in machine intelligence, a field with wide-ranging applications including image and language processing and environmental data prediction.

We pursue research and development that has a societal impact by theoretically studying deep learning and multimodal language processing technologies for classification, prediction, and generation, and applying them to areas such as life-support robots.

In fact, we have built a prediction system for solar flares, which can cause significant damage to artificial satellites, and have achieved performance surpassing that of experts for the first time in the world. Additionally, the technologies developed in our laboratory are beginning to be used in applications close to our daily lives, such as voice-controlled conversational apps and tourist information systems.
