The Chemistry of Molecules with Spin: Aiming to Develop Organic Magnets and New Batteries

In the Yoshioka Laboratory, we conduct research on organic magnetic materials.

Magnetism has been considered a property unique to metallic elements and a function unrelated to organic matter, but in recent years, it has become clear that magnets can be made from lightweight and soft organic materials.

When we pursue the origin of the property of magnets attracting and repelling each other, we arrive at the spin magnetic moment of electrons. These isolated electrons are called unpaired electrons and exhibit properties as mini-magnets. However, since the magnetic property of a single molecule is extremely weak, a technology is needed to align individual molecules with each other.
