The Imai Laboratory conducts research on biominerals, which are minerals produced by living organisms, such as seashells and bones.

Our modern lives are supported by a material civilization centered on metals, semiconductors, and plastics, but the large amounts of energy and waste this generates place a burden on the environment. Living organisms, on the other hand, create a variety of sophisticated, high-performance materials under mild conditions—in water at ambient temperature and pressure—without burdening the environment.
