Okada Laboratory - Measurement of Biological Functions Using Light

Just as one's health can be judged by their complexion—that is, the amount of blood in the body—the functions of a living, active body can be measured by examining changes in blood volume. At the Okada Laboratory, we are researching technology for measuring biological functions, such as the constantly changing blood volume in the brain. This is done by utilizing the property of near-infrared light, which has a longer wavelength than visible light, to pass through the body and be absorbed by blood.
