Along with the trend of open science, institutional support for the proper management of research data is becoming increasingly important. In response to this trend, the Office for Research Coordination and Administration had the opportunity to conduct a survey on the current status and future needs of data management at research sites on each campus. The results, with the cooperation of over 600 people, unsurprisingly revealed the diversity of research activities conducted at Keio University.
These include the need for an environment to smoothly handle petabyte-scale data on the cloud and for support to efficiently digitize historical records and materials on paper and other media. There is also an expectation that painstakingly collected data will not be lost or scattered but that the organization will responsibly maintain and manage it for societal use even after researchers transfer or retire. The question is what kind of support system for research data management we should build while respecting the autonomy of each researcher. Amid the major trend of digitalization, we are required to support the transformation of research itself. Discussions at the Juku have only just begun. It is hoped that we will continue to hear many voices from the research field.
