Creating the Future: "SFC's Autumn" @ Roppongi | Masatoshi Tamamura, Director, Keio Research Institute at SFC

November 13, 2019

November is here, and autumn has deepened. The colors at SFC are also vibrant. It's a time when we can truly feel the "autumn of XX," such as autumn for appetite, autumn for fruition, autumn for harvest, autumn for arts, autumn for reading, and autumn for sports. For me, working in a traveler-like style, moving between SFC and various places, it's an autumn where I worry about overeating because there's so much delicious food everywhere. But when it comes to autumn at SFC, it's the "autumn of learning" and the SFC Open Research Forum (ORF) .

SFC has always been committed to jitsugaku (science), one of the core principles of Keio University, which involves continuous creation with society, and continues to operate as a "university that creates the future." The ORF is an event that these SFC colleagues create together every year with various partners. This is the 24th year of the ORF. It is a place of flourishing ideas, developed on the foundation of SFC's broad and accumulated research and development; a place where we can think from the future, a place where the future is born.

This year's ORF will be held at Tokyo Midtown (Roppongi) on November 22 (Fri) and 23 (Sat/Holiday) (admission is free). Under the direction of Executive Committee Chair Norichika Kanie (Professor, Graduate School of Media and Governance) , SFC faculty, students, staff, partners, researchers, and others are making preparations unique to this year.

This year's theme is " Beyond SDGs (The Society After the SDGs) ." A message from Mr. Kanie states the following:

'SFC continues its research activities with an eye on the society that is always one or two steps ahead. It is precisely because we are looking ahead to the next society, beyond the SDGs, that we can see the problems of the "present" and respond to the demands of society. And this approach becomes the driving force that will significantly move the future.

The SFC Open Research Forum is packed with "mechanisms" to move the future. We move forward in the present by thinking about the future that should exist for humanity and the planet. Let's talk about the seeds of the future at this forum, where you can feel the DNA of SFC.'

The SFC community is active on frontiers around the world, but this year on November 22-23, we will gather in Roppongi. We invite you all to come to ORF @ Roppongi on November 22-23. On these days, there will be pitches, exhibitions, and sessions, each created with great passion... An exciting venue will unfold.

I find myself thinking that such wonderful things shouldn't be limited to just autumn, but I also think I need to be careful not to overeat as I always do...
