(For this issue, we have asked each of our leaders to write about their summer vacation in the language of their choice.)
August 3, 2004 (Thursday)
From Tokyo (cloudy) to Tomakomai, Hokkaido (raining on and off)
Flew from Haneda to Chitose at 7 a.m.
Every year, I take a three-day midsummer golf trip to Tomakomai, Hokkaido, with close friends just before the national summer holidays in Japan.
This year, thank God, I can not only play golf but also escape the hellish heat of Tokyo, which set a heat record of 39.5°C this July. We started our game around 10 a.m. and finished at 3 p.m., because in Hokkaido, like in Europe, you play golf straight through without a break for lunch. After a pleasant soak in the hot spring at the golf course, we checked into a hotel in Tomakomai that we had, of course, already reserved.
Around 7 p.m., we went out and enjoyed a delicious Hokkaido dinner.
After returning to the hotel, we watched the national team's soccer match against Bahrain in the semifinals of the Asian Cup tournament in China on TV and toasted Japan's dramatic comeback victory. But at the same time, we were quite surprised by the extraordinarily strong anti-Japanese sentiment from the Chinese.
At 11 p.m., we went to bed peacefully and slept soundly.
Tomorrow, we will play golf again until about 2 p.m., after which we will drive to Otaru to have a nice dinner of Hokkaido seafood.
The day after tomorrow, after another round of golf near Chitose Airport, we will fly back at 4 p.m.
How wonderful a vacation is!
Bravo!!!
