A Day in the Life of the Dean: 24 Hours | Hideyuki Tokuda (Dean, Graduate School of Media and Governance)

Woke up at the usual time. Went for a walk with my beloved dog, Cookie, who joined our family last year, on our usual route. She is an 11-month-old female yellow Labrador, full of mischief and a handful, but we enjoy our walk together.

After returning to my lab for just 10 minutes, I had a meeting with Mr. Yoshiwara, the new Director of the Research Initiative, both faculty deans, and the Director of the Keio Research Institute at SFC. I have high hopes for the further enhancement of our research support system.

Returned to my lab for a meeting with my secretary and students.

Attended the dissertation hearing for Mr. I of the Ph.D. program in a graduate seminar. I organized the questions and comments from the three sub-examiners and conducted the review. He passed.

Meeting in my lab for the Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology project.

Briefly explained the laboratory to a visitor from MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) who came for a site visit of the Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology project. I then handed over the rest of the tour to Mr. N.

Perhaps because of the long steering committee meeting scheduled for this weekend, it finished on time.

Meeting in Conference Room 1.

Joined an ongoing meeting in the Large Conference Room on the 4th floor of the Main Building about the new AV setup. I asked the vendors various questions. The audio system and projectors, which were in pretty bad shape, will be replaced. We discussed functions like remote conference support. The vendors didn't seem to have a deep understanding of the various usage patterns for the Large Conference Room, which is a bit concerning. I received a call from my lab that a visitor was waiting.

Coordinated my schedule with my secretary.

Organized the various comments pointed out during the dissertation hearing for Mr. I and discussed the revisions for his doctoral dissertation.

Discussed whether experimental equipment would be needed for the graduation thesis topics proposed by members of the ACE group. Returned to my office and e-mailed the draft of my keynote speech for ACM EMSOFT 2004, which had been requested. Organized materials for the WWW2005 teleconference scheduled for 8:00 a.m. tomorrow. Processed other emails.

Left SFC and headed home in my car.

Arrived home and had dinner.

Took Cookie for her evening walk, later than usual. It's still hot even at this hour.

Went to bed.
