Happy New Year 2006.
On New Year's Day this year, the deans and chairs—Tomita of the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies, Sato of the Faculty of Nursing and Medical Care, Tokuda of the Graduate School of Media and Governance, Yoshino of the Graduate School of Health Management, and myself, Kojima of the Faculty of Policy Management—along with SFC Administrative Director Mr. Konno and even former Dean Kumasaka of the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies, gathered at 9:30 a.m. to attend the annual New Year's party hosted by the Endo District Neighborhood Association.
The SFC executive members all attend the New Year's party because SFC is a member of the Endo District Neighborhood Association. For SFC, which has always emphasized symbiosis with the local community, the association is an extremely important partner, and the development of SFC would be unthinkable without the support of its residents.
In addition to locally elected members of the National Diet and the prefectural assembly, Mayor Yamamoto of Fujisawa City also attended the New Year's party. They all stressed that cooperation with SFC is essential for the future development of the local area, and this renewed our determination at SFC to live up to these expectations.
Keio University will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2008, and SFC will mark its 20th anniversary in 2010. I conveyed to the local residents that we will take the opportunity of these milestone years to aim for new development at SFC, and that in doing so, based on the 150th anniversary key concept of "Independence and Symbiosis," SFC wishes to further deepen its collaboration with the local community.
While we received understanding from the local people, they also offered some frank advice that daily cooperation is essential for our partnership and that it is necessary to ensure specific manners are followed, such as eliminating illegal parking by students. To all students: let's act with the awareness that the local people are always watching.
After the New Year's party, I visited Sengen Shrine, tossed in a coin offering from my pocket, and prayed for SFC's successful development this year and for the number of applicants to double. This may sound a bit worldly, but securing talented individuals like our current students is critically important for SFC.
