My Go-To: Clothes I Feel Comfortable In | Yoko Sato (Dean, Faculty of Nursing and Medical Care)

My go-to brand for clothing is Aquascutum. I've tried many different things, but this is what I feel most comfortable wearing. Twice a year, during the New Year and early summer bargain sale seasons, I get restless. As soon as the postcard announcement arrives, I eagerly head out. Since it's a bargain sale, there are times when I can't find anything I like or that I can wear. On those occasions, I get very disappointed and end up looking at other brands and buying something just for the sake of it. During the sale season, if I don't buy something, I feel like I've missed out on a huge deal and get depressed. I know that buying things this way usually ends in failure, but I can't help it; I just can't stop.

Since I go with the intention of buying something, it doesn't take much time to make a purchase. For work clothes, the pattern is almost always the same. I look for something with the image of a men's suit. Recently, pantsuits have also become part of my repertoire. Considering my appearance, I'm not confident I can pull them off, but comfort takes priority. When it comes to skirts, I choose ones that aren't tight but have enough room so I don't have to worry about my knees being exposed when I sit down. When I also consider inconspicuous colors, my range of choices naturally narrows, which means less time spent deliberating and a quicker decision. I'd like to choose something that gives a bright and cheerful impression if possible, but it's quite difficult to reconcile that with being inconspicuous. I often end up with what you might call a drab, mousy color. Speaking of bright, energizing colors, a certain cabinet minister once attended the Diet in a bright red suit she called her "power outfit," and it looked great on her. Fortunately, I don't encounter many situations where I have to go into "battle," so I don't need a "power outfit." It's more comfortable for me to wear my usual staples and keep a low profile.
