A Mutually Inspiring Camp for Designing the Future | Jiro Kokuryo (Dean, Faculty of Policy Management)

2011.07.01

With the hope that high school students will join SFC's activities, where we work hands-on with our current students to build the society of the future, we will be holding the "Camp for Designing the Future" on August 2. Participants will be divided into five workshops: the "DigiFab Workshop: The Future of Manufacturing," the "Little Press Workshop," the "Social Design Workshop: Envisioning the World of 2040," the "Social Innovation Workshop," and the "Workshop on Designing Environments for Foreign Language Education." In these workshops, they will mobilize cutting-edge knowledge to devise solutions for the most pressing issues in our real-world society.

Although this project has become a one-day event due to safety considerations following the earthquake, we originally intended for it to be an overnight stay. The reason is that at SFC, we have a concept for a Miraisozojuku (Institute for Designing the Future), and we want it to be a place where students, alumni, and visitors can stay overnight to work on building the future.

Once it is completed, we hope to hold annual overnight events during summer vacation and other times for prospective high school students considering admission to SFC, allowing them to experience SFC firsthand and understand its unique characteristics. Through this kind of long-term engagement, we hope to welcome individuals with whom we feel a mutual connection—a sense of shared inspiration.

The Miraisozojuku (Institute for Designing the Future) concept has become something of an obstacle course due to events like the Lehman shock and the earthquake, but with a firm resolve to see it through, we have already begun its substantive activities even before the facility is built. The Camp for Designing the Future is part of this effort.

The workshop titles may seem a bit difficult, but we intend for this to be a camp where participants can enjoy putting cutting-edge content into practice. We will be giving original T-shirts to participants, and we hope everyone can wear them and have a great time together. We have extended the application deadline to July 15, so please share this information with any high school students who might be interested.
