While serving as vice principal of a high school opened in Futaba District, Fukushima Prefecture, an area affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, I am also dedicated to reforming school curricula nationwide as a member of the Central Council for Education. Eighty percent of the students attending this high school have experienced evacuation due to the nuclear accident, and about half of them still live in dormitories away from home. The reason these students go to such lengths to study at this school is their strong desire to “do something for Fukushima.” I want to empower them not just to learn knowledge for entrance exams, but to take the first step toward changing society.
When designing the curriculum, I always have the image of SFC in my mind. At SFC, you can design your own learning environment, so while being conscious of “what to learn and for what purpose,” I always genuinely felt in group work that “this project might change society.” Drawing on SFC's educational philosophy and spirit, I want to create a place where children can reshape Fukushima's society as they learn.
