前年度にNatureに論文発表を行ったメキシコ湾流の大気応答に関して, データ解析, 領域大気モデル, 大気大循環モデルを用いた複合的研究を行った. データ解析では, 夏季と冬季に大きく異なる大気応答が生じることを示し, これを仮に夏季モード, 冬季モードと名付けた. 領域大気モデルでは, 力学的なメカニズムを同定する手法を開発し, これを湾流に対する接地境界層応答に適用して, 風の水平収束の大部分が圧力調整メカニズムによることを定量的に明らかにした. この風の収束は, 降水や対流圏上空に及ぶ上昇気流と関連して興味深いものである. また, 大気大循環モデルAFESでの実験から、SSTフロントに沿って現れる降水バンドが、SST勾配に伴う表面風の収束に伴う水蒸気収束とメキシコ湾流からの蒸発によってもたらされ、鉛直風の応答高度は季節変化する対流圏の安定度に伴って季節変動することを明らかにした。 また、大気海洋結合モデルCFESを用いて20年以上の全球高解像度計算を実施し、人工衛星観測で捉えられている海洋フロント域での風応力場の構造や降水量の分布などが、計算結果において再現されていることを確認した。さらに, 環オホーツク圏領域気候モデルを用いて1998年7月に発達したオホーツク海高気圧とそれに伴う下層雲について再現実験を行い、現場観測と比較した。定量的には改善の余地があるが、下層雲ま...

In order to explorer atmospheric responses to ocean currents such as the Kuroshio, and to know possibility that the atmospheric responses further feedback onto the ocean, researches are conducted with a focus on the Kuroshio in the East China Sea (ECS). Data analysis found "deep heating (atmospheric response) mode" over the Kuroshio in ECS accompanied by prominent diurnal rain and cloud variability in the middle of the Baiu-Meiyu season. Numerical studies showed that ECS causes stronger developments of low-pressure systems around Japan and that seasonal ECS warming plays an important role in heavy rain events over Kyushu in July. In-situ ship observations revealed weakening of surface winds over the Kuroshio in winter and showed an important role of convective available potential energy in precipitation over the Kuroshio in Baiu-Meiyu season. These studies are important contributions for rapidly developing research field of mid-latitude air-sea interaction.

黒潮続流域の海面水温偏差の形成に重要な混合層厚偏差の形成メカニズムの調査を進めるとともに、北太平洋における十年規模の気候変動において重要な役割を果たす水温偏差の再出現過程の実態の解析を推進した。また、北太平洋亜寒帯循環表層の塩分躍層について、永年的な躍層に加え、夏季に発達する季節的な躍層を見出した。 水平解像度1/30度の高解像度北太平洋海洋モデルOFES2の1990年から2016年までの過去再現実験の出力を用い，北太平洋の亜熱帯反流域で冬季に活発なサブメソスケールの微細現象循環場の経年から十年規模変動を調べた。一方で、OFES2を用いた水平解像度1/10度の北太平洋海洋モデルに対して低次生態系の動的環境適応（FlexPFT）モデルと従来の低次生態系モデルをそれぞれ結合させ、それぞれシミュレーションを実施した。その結果、動的環境適応モデルは従来のモデルに比べて、特に亜熱帯域におけるクロロフィル濃度極大層をよく再現できることが示された。 2017年に発生した黒潮大蛇行のアンサンブル予測実験を実施し、現実同様、大蛇行の長期化を予測した。黒潮の低流量状態が持続していることが長期化の要因と考えられる。また、黒潮続流の下流域においては海洋中規模渦の活動度の経年・十年規模変動が数年前から予測出来る可能性があることを示唆した。 黒潮のような海盆西岸に形成される強い海流と同様に急峻な水平温度勾配を伴う内海と陸の境界に着目して大気大循環モデルを用いた数値実験を実施し、海岸域に表層風の収束・発散が生じること、その影響の及ぶ高度が夏季と冬季で異なること、などを見出した。また、大気大循環モデルAFESによる高解像度（約50km）アンサンブル過去再現実験を実施し、この実験結果と大気再解析データを組み合わせ、北太平洋域の大気変動の強制応答成分を評価した。

We carried out 63-member coupled ocean-sea-ice simulations forced by outputs from atmospheric ensemble reanalysis, and found that seasonal variations of the ensemble spreads are quite different between sea-ice concentration and thickness. We also developed an atmospheric data assimilation system using a global coupled atmos-phere-ocean-sea-ice model, and howed some signatures of atmosphere-ocean interaction via sea ice in the analysis fields.

We have constructed a system to assimilate atmospheric observational data into a global coupled atmosphere-ocean model using a ensemble-based method, and conducted two-months of experimental reanalysis. Effects of atmosphere-ocean interaction, such as lead-lag relationship between SST and precipitation, are well reflected in the reanalysis. In addition, the basin-scale structure of surface atmospheric variables over the tropical Pacific is reconstructed from the ensemble correlation in the CGCM-based system but not in the AGCM-based system. We also derived some basic equations for temporal development of ensemble mean and spread, and got interesting knowledge helpful to interpret the results.

By using numerical modelling and data analysis, we have discovered the mid-latitude ocean influences on a wide range of atmospheric phenomena, including termination of Baiu rain season over the northwestern North Pacific, the route and strength of tropical cyclones, Europe blocking and its impact on cold spells. We have found that the pressure adjustment mechanism works over major western boundary currents in the mid-latitudes globally. We have developed a new diagnostic method that enable us to determine mechanisms near surface (10 m altitude) winds for time-mean field, and have showed that both the pressure adjustment mechanism and the vertical mixing mechanism working but differently. Also, we have reported for the first time that observed decadal variability of the Kuroshio Extension is due to the jet-trapped Rossby wave, and that the decadal Kuroshio Extension changes impact Japanese coastal sea-level.

短期変動予測への応用に資するため、全球大気海洋結合モデル CFES へ海面水温の観測データのみを簡便な手法（ナッジ法）を用いて同化する試験的な季節予測システムについて、前年度同様に、毎月1日から6ヶ月間・12メンバーでの予測実験を準リアルタイムで継続した。 また、大気大循環モデル AFES において、黒海やカスピ海など、全球を対象とした数値モデルでは三次元的に計算することが困難な内海に関して、非一様な水深分布を入力可能なように改良し、より現実的な水温変動が再現できることを確認した。さらに、内海に高温偏差が存在する場合、内海と周辺の陸域との熱的コントラストに起因して、風上側で発散偏差・風下側で収束偏差が生じ、海岸線に沿った発散域で少雨偏差・収束域で多雨偏差が生じ得ること、これらに伴い、内海周辺での降水分布も改善することを見出した。 AFES と局所アンサンブル変換カルマンフィルタ (LETKF) を用いたアンサンブルデータ同化システム ALEDAS2 に、一つ一つの観測データに対する予報感度を診断できる EFSO と呼ばれる手法を導入し、実験結果をまとめた共著論文が、アメリカ気象学会が出版する Weather and Forecasting 誌に受理・オンライン公開された。この論文では、北極域・中緯度域・熱帯域のいずれの緯度帯においても2-3日先までの予報に対する影響を正しく推定できること、特に北極域の観測データは北米の6-7日先の予報を改善しうることを示した。

Ekman pumping is a fundamental tool for understanding the causality in ocean variability except for the equator, where Ekman pumping becomes infinity. We have solved this difficulty by proposing and producing Ekman-pumping forced model for the first time and its adjuring backward integration version. By conducting a series of numerical experiments, we have found that off-equatorial Ekman pumping contribute more strongly in the Indian Ocean rather than in the Pacific Ocean for the equatorial upper layer thickness variability. Also, off-equatorial Ekman pumping contributes more for large-magnitude events of Indian Ocean dipole mode than for small magnitude events.

Atmosphere-ocean (-sea ice) interaction processes in the Sea of Okhotsk and the Arctic Sea were investigated, where characteristic seasonality, such as the formation of seasonal sea ice areas in winter as well as the formation of the Okhotsk High and low-level clouds in summer, is exhibited. Sea surface temperature (SST) in the Sea of Okhotsk is kept cool in summer. This is likely attributed to the feedback between the SST and the low-level clouds. As for winter, it was found that the sea ice extent in the Sea of Okhotsk is linked well with the sea ice extent of the preceding summer in the Eastern Siberian Sea within the Arctic Sea. We investigated this linkage from a novel point of view, which is the annual Arctic Oscillation (annual AO), defined by the surface pressure anomaly averaged over one year from January of each year. Feedback processes associated with the annual AO were discussed.

Over the last five years, the “Hot Spot Project” on extratropical air-sea interaction has conducted comprehensive research, providing a number of pieces of evidence that extratropical ocean, especially the warm Kuroshio and its Extension east of Japan and an associated frontal sea-surface temperature gradient with the cool Oyashio, can actively influence the overlying atmosphere. One of the main focuses of this group (A03-8) is the East Asian winter monsoon variability, which we find to be a manifestation of modulated seasonal evolution of planetary waves. The particular tropospheric blocking anticyclone that acts to enhance the monsoon is found to cool the Arctic stratosphere. We also demonstrate that decadal variability of the oceanic frontal zone east of Japan can not only modulate the boundary layer locally but also force a basin-scale atmospheric anomaly.
