近年、音楽経験を豊富に積んだ高齢者は、音楽経験の少ない高齢者に比べて、ワーキングメモリーや実行機能など、認知課題の成績が優れていると報告された。これらの先行研究を踏まえると、音楽はヒトの認知機能の改善や維持、長寿健康社会の実現に有用であると示唆されるが、その神経生理メカニズムは十分に解明されていない。そこで本研究では、核磁気共鳴スペクトロスコピー（MRS）と、経頭蓋磁気刺激と高解像度脳波の同時計測手法（TMS-EEG）を用いて、音楽家と非音楽家の前頭前野グルタミン酸・γアミノ酪酸（GABA）神経機能を横断比較し、音楽機能・認知機能との関連性を解明する。 音楽家の脳機能の解明、特に音楽機能と認知機能の関連性や両機能を支える神経基盤の解明を目的とし、以下の通り研究を推進した。(1) 研究分担者と連携し、マルチモーダル脳機能イメージング手法(核磁気共鳴画像法 [MRI]、核磁気共鳴スペクトロスコピー法 [MRS]、経頭蓋磁気刺激[TMS]-高解像度脳波[EEG]の同時計測法 [TMS-EEG])を用いた神経科学実験を推進した。(2) 音楽家の認知機能と音楽機能に関して予備的データ解析を実施した。具体的には、音楽家において得られた認知機能評価タスク(RBANS, JART, LNS, EXIT)と音楽機能評価タスク(Harvard Beat Assessment Test: H-BAT)のスコア群について其々主成分分析を施した後、認知機能評価タスク群の第1主成分得点と音楽機能評価タスク群の第1主成分得点間の相関関係を分析した。解析の結果、音楽機能が高いほど、認知機能が高いことが明らかとなった。(3) 協和音の嗜好性と安静時脳機能ネットワークの関連性について予備的解析を行った。その結果、左側坐核ー右上頭頂回、前帯状回ー後上側頭回の安静時脳機能ネットワークが協和音の嗜好性に関連している可能性を得た。(4)演奏評価判断中の視聴覚情報処理過程について調査した。予備的解析の結果、音楽家と非音楽家とで演奏評価判断時の視聴覚情報処理過程が異なる可能性を得た。(5)その他、音楽機能と精神疾患の関連性(本多, 野田, 中島, 藤井, 2021)、歌の科学(北山, サベジ, 藤井, 2021)、コロナ時代の音楽(村井, 真鍋, 藤井, 2021)、音楽表現の発展可能性(田中と藤井, 2021)、巧みな音楽演奏にみられる時間ゆらぎとグルーヴ（藤井, 2020）について総説・解説記事をまとめて発表した。 上記研究実績欄で述べた(1)-(5)の成果を総合的に判断し、「おおむね順調に進展している」と判断した。本研究の目的は、MRSやTMS-EEGなどのマルチモーダル脳機能イメージングを用いて、音楽家の脳機能や音楽機能と認知機能の関連性を解明することであり、音楽家はリズムやピッチ、和音などの音楽的構成要素を高次に処理する脳の働き(=音楽機能)を備えており、音楽機能の高い個人は認知機能にも優れているのではないかという仮説を立てた。上記(1)(2)に記載の通り、実験を推進しながら予備的解析を行い、音楽機能が高い個人ほど認知機能が高いという仮説を支持する結果を得ることができた。また、協和音の嗜好性と安静時脳機能ネットワークの関連性や、音楽家と非音楽家の演奏評価判断時の視聴覚情報処理過程についても研究を推進することができた。加えて、音楽機能と精神疾患の関連性、歌の科学、コロナ時代の音楽、音楽表現の発展可能性、巧みな音楽演奏にみられる時間ゆらぎとグルーヴについての総説・解説記事をまとめ、ジャーナル誌上に発表することができた。また、音楽科学に関する国際研究会議(CLaME Event: Building sustainable global collaborative research networks)に参加し、日本と北米の音楽科学の現状について発表し、国際的に連携して持続的な音楽科学研究をするにはどうすべきか議論をおこなった（藤井, 2021）。これら現在までの進捗状況を俯瞰し、今後の研究につながる成果を得ることができたため、「おおむね順調に進展している」と判断した。 今後の研究の推進方針として、まずはマルチモーダル脳機能イメージングを用いた神経科学実験を引き続き推進することを計画している。多様な音楽経験を持つ健常者の音楽機能と認知機能データに加え、精神疾患患者の音楽機能と認知機能についても研究を推進する予定である。またデータ収集と並行して、音楽機能・認知機能データ、マルチモーダル脳機能イメージングデータの予備的分析もさらに推進していく予定である。具体的には、音楽機能評価としては、ハーバードビート評価テスト(Harvard Beat Assessment Test: H-BAT)のスコアだけでなく、ピッチ方向識別課題、和音判別課題、バルセロナ式音楽報酬質問紙(BMRQ)等の音楽機能評価スコアの解析を進める予定である。MRS、TMS-EEGデータについては、まずMRSデータの解析に焦点をあて、グルタミン酸指標と音楽機能・認知機能の関連性について研究を進める予定である。加えて、Voxel-based Morphometry(VBM)解析、Cortical Thickness(皮質厚)解析等を行い、脳イメージング指標と音楽機能評価指標・認知機能評価指標の関連性についても研究を進める予定である。協和音の嗜好性と安静時脳機能ネットワークの関連性や、音楽家と非音楽家とで演奏評価判断時の視聴覚情報処理過程については、これまでの成果をさらに発展させてデータ解析や追加実験を行い、成果を国際音楽神経科学会議（Neurosciences & Music VII）にて発表する予定である。新型コロナウィルス感染症(COVID-19)に関する社会情勢等を踏まえ、オンライン調査の実施、音楽家に関する既取得データの解析、関連文献レビューにも焦点を当てるなど、適宜柔軟に対応しながら音楽家の脳機能について精力的に研究を推進する方策である。

We conducted a neuromusic study for understanding individual differences in rhythm perception and production. We developed the iOS version of the Harvard Beat Assessment Test (HBAT) which can be run on iPhone and iPad. The iOS version of HBAT provides a simple objective method for investigating individual differences in rhythm perception and production. Furthermore, we conducted structural and functional brain imaging studies using the HBAT combined with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). We found that individual differences in rhythm perception related to the cerebellar gray matter volumes (Paquette, Li, Fujii, Schlaug, 2017), and that the brain activities in the premotor and supplementary motor areas related to the perception of beat interval changes. In addition, we conducted a cross-cultural comparison study to investigate "the integer ratio priors on musical rhythm" in Japanese traditional and western musicians and non-musicians.

本研究では、ライブ音楽演奏における表現者と鑑賞者の心の動きの時間的同調性の解明を目的に研究を行う。研究者とアーティストが協力し、アコースティック弾き語り形式のライブ音楽演奏実験を実施し、ウェアラブルマルチ生体センサーによって、表現者の心拍、呼吸、加速度、及び、鑑賞者の主観的な感動度、心拍、呼吸、加速度を計測する。位相同期解析の手法を用いて、表現者と鑑賞者の心理生理反応の時間的同調性を明らかにすることで、音楽演奏における表現者と鑑賞者の心の動きの時間的同調性を明らかにする。本研究を通じて、ヒトに感動を与える演奏とは一体何か、音楽が喚起する感動の本質について、科学的な理解を得ることに挑戦する。

Music is a human universal, but there remains little data on cross-cultural musical variation. We will perform a series of experiments investigating global diversity in perception and production of musical 1) rhythm, 2) melody, 3) harmony, 4) language, 5) creativity, and 6) cooperation. In total we will conduct experiments with thousands of musicians and non-musicians from over a dozen countries around the world. Our findings will have implications for understanding the evolution of music and its place in society, including for composers, instrument manufacturers, copyright legislators, etc. In FY2020 we published 4 articles in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings, bringing our total published outputs to 5. Our article published in Behavioral and Brain Sciences (the highest impact journal in the field of behavioral science) was accompanied by 60 mostly positive commentaries from 109 experts. Our article published in ISMIR (the highest impact journal across all fields of music studies) received the "Best Application" paper award. We successfully held our planned symposium with 23 world experts online and the resulting coauthored journal has been accepted for publication as a chapter in an edited volume published by MIT Press. Our initial conference planned for March 2020 had to be postponed due to COVID19, but we managed to successfully hold it via Zoom in February 2021 and are making good progress on other projects despite some pandemic-related setbacks (e.g., by running online experiments when they can't be done in-person). For the 2021 financial year, we will submit our first major manuscript comparing global variation in rhythm perception (Jacoby et al., in prep). We have hired a postdoc to lead analyses of a global database of musical diversity, which we aim to analyze and submit for publication by the end of FY2021. We will continue collecting data and submitting the results of those experiments that can be held online, while those that must be done in-person may need to wait for another year or so. We will continue to hold regular meetings with co-investigators (all meetings online until pandemic restrictions ease).
