- Le manuscrit autographe de La Machine infernale, présumé perdu ou détruit, a été redécouvert en 2012 et intégré à la collection du Musée des Lettres et Manuscrits. Nous avons pu l'examiner peu avant la fermeture soudaine de ce musée en 2015. Nous avons entrepris dans ce contexte une étude génétique de la pièce. À l'origine, elle n'était pas destinée à être une œuvre en quatre actes. Cocteau a d'abord rédigé ce qui allait devenir l'acte II, conçu comme un prologue à son adaptation de la tragédie de Sophocle, puis l'acte I, comme un pro-prologue à l'acte II. Avant de s'atteler aux actes III et IV, il envisageait une représentation autonome des deux premiers actes sous le titre de La Mort du Sphinx. Cette communication s'interrogera, en se référant aux manuscrits, sur le corps du Sphinx en perpétuelle transmutation, oscillant entre deux figures opposées : celle d'une jeune fille imprégnée de fragilité humaine et celle de Némésis, déesse implacable de la vengeance. Son corps, prédestiné par les dieux à tuer et à mourir, apparaît comme un intermédiaire dans un ordre hiérarchique, tel un rouage de cette machine infernale.
