On Saturday, January 25, 2025, we will hold Ambarvalia XIV: Junzaburo Nishiwaki and the "Fragrant Firemen"—What Does the Re-examination of Modernism Bring?

The "Ambarvalia Festival," commemorating the birth of Junzaburo Nishiwaki, has been held every January since 2012.

This time, we will hold a symposium on the theme of "Junzaburo Nishiwaki and Modernism." First, Mr. Kiwao Nomura will provide an overview of the relationship between modern Japanese poetry and "modernism." Next, Mr. Hiromasa Wakita will speak about Yukio Haruyama, who embodied and wrote poetry in the early stages of Japanese modernism, focusing on the period when he was deeply involved with Nishiwaki as the editor of "Poetry and Poetics" (Shi to Shiron).

Mr. Motonori Sato will delve into the relationship between British modernist literature, such as T.S. Eliot and James Joyce, and Nishiwaki's poetry. We will take this opportunity to reconsider "modernism," which is closely related to Nishiwaki's poetic work but has not been addressed in previous Ambarvalia Festivals.
