The 51st Research and Education Center for Natural Sciences Lecture (2023 Young Researcher Award Commemorative Lecture) will be held on Monday, June 3, 2024.

Venus is often called Earth's "sister planet" because its size, density, and distance from the sun are similar to Earth's, but its temperature distribution and atmospheric conditions are significantly different. However, Venus is covered in thick clouds, and its internal state is not well understood. It is difficult to grasp the overall picture from satellite observation data, which is limited in time and space. While numerical simulations of atmospheric motion using general circulation models have been attempted, they have not accurately reproduced the motion of the Venusian atmosphere.

In the research presented here, we succeeded in creating the world's first objective analysis data (meteorological dataset) of the Venusian atmosphere by adding observation data obtained from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Venus climate orbiter "Akatsuki" to a Venusian atmospheric data assimilation system using the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology's supercomputer, the "Earth Simulator." This research achievement, which compensates for the uncertainty of numerical simulations and the intermittency of observation data, makes the most of both observation data and numerical simulations and is expected to provide a new clue to elucidating the motion of the Venusian atmosphere.
