Discussions surrounding Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) are entering a new stage.
In Europe, the Unified Patent Court (UPC) was established, and a new legislative proposal regarding SEPs was submitted by the European Commission. Furthermore, in the face of China's national strategy to become an intellectual property powerhouse, the United States and South Korea have also announced national standard strategies one after another. The environment surrounding SEPs has been changing globally, and it was a year in which the movements of patent pools such as Avanci also drew attention.
While disputes over SEPs continue, it was also a year in which movements toward resolution, such as the conclusion of large-scale licensing agreements and the termination of litigation, were more prominent than new lawsuits or judgments.
The Keio University Intellectual Property Forum will welcome the SEP (Standard Essential Patent) Study Group, which is entering its 11th year of activity, and co-host the SEP Global Workshop with the group to look back on global trends surrounding SEPs.
