The Fukuzawa Memorial Center for Modern Japanese Studies Lectures will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2024; Saturday, December 14, 2024; Saturday, January 18, 2025; Saturday, February 15, 2025; and Saturday, March 15, 2025.

Tokujirō Obata, who studied under Yukichi Fukuzawa and continued to support his various enterprises including Keio University, stated in an editorial for the "Yubin Hochi Shinbun" dated December 7, 1875, that Japan today is undergoing an "unprecedented transformation" where "spirit, morality, politics, customs, literature, and arts" are all about to change, but it is not simply a matter of "transferring" the civilization and enlightenment of those lands.

"Seeds that are the result of 'thousand-fold polishing and hundred-fold refining' through many years and efforts in a land with a different climate will not grow if planted blindly." How to accept Western civilization during the Meiji Restoration was a major challenge for Yukichi Fukuzawa and his students.

In this lecture series, we will consider the acceptance of Western civilization in modern Japan from various perspectives such as translation, education, and law.
