Keio University
The Chinese zodiac sign for 2025 is the Snake (Mi). People have sometimes feared and sometimes revered the snake, with its long body adorned with various patterns, moving about freely. As a messenger of the gods, a controller of life, a symbol of wisdom, or an incarnation of attachment, the snake appears in cultural artifacts with diverse imagery, both in the East and the West. To mark the beginning of the new year, this exhibition brings together a diverse collection of works related to "snakes" from departments at Keio University engaged in activities involving cultural properties on its campuses. The collection includes rare books (kikōbon), folding screens, mirrors, photographs, and decorative plaques. We invite you to the dwelling place of these slightly frightening, yet glamorous snakes.
