Associate Professor Shun Kohsaka from the Division of Cardiology, Keio University, and Project Researcher Ryo Nakamaru from the Department of Healthcare Quality Assessment, The University of Tokyo, in collaboration with Shizuoka Graduate University of Public Health, have announced the results of a large-scale analysis using the Shizuoka Kokuho Database (SKDB).
Focusing on patients with atrial fibrillation, a relatively common arrhythmia, the study revealed that frailty indicators in these patients progressed over time. It also showed that a significant step-up in the frailty index in the preceding year was observed in the majority of those who subsequently died. On the other hand, cases leading to death via embolic or bleeding complications, which are widely feared in patients with atrial fibrillation, were limited in this database, which primarily consists of elderly individuals.
Through these findings, the research group believes it is necessary to make more organic use of large-scale clinical data, individually predicting potential future events to inform decision-making regarding arrhythmic diseases. These findings were published in the online edition of the international academic journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes on June 19, 2024.
