In a joint study with Professor Richard Baldwin of the Geneva Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Professor Toshihiro Okubo of the Faculty of Economics, Keio University, empirically analyzed using data from Japan whether artificial intelligence (AI) and remote intelligence (RI)—the ability to work from anywhere without being tied to a specific location—are substitutes or complements in the context of the service industry.
The preliminary results suggest that AI and RI are not substitutes, but rather complements.
As automation and telework become technologically feasible in many occupations, these findings provide valuable insights into the future of work. The results of this research were published online in the international peer-reviewed journal The World Economy on September 20, 2023.
