Keio University
This third installment of the "Artist Voice" exhibition series features Tetsuro Komai (1920–1976), a pioneer of copperplate engraving in Japan. Komai studied at Keio Yochisha Elementary School and Keio Futsubu School and dedicated his life to exploring expression through copperplate engraving. This exhibition will display original drawings for cover art and illustrations that Komai provided for the university's official journals, "Mita-hyoron (official monthly journal published by Keio University Press)" and "Juku," in addition to prints and related materials from the Keio University collection. In contrast to his austere prints, created by engraving lines with deep contemplation, the fluid sketches made with pen and brush for his illustrations offer a glimpse into the artist's more liberated and playful side.
We invite you to trace the artist's lines and enjoy a world of poetry and humor woven from ink and paper.
