Based on a questionnaire survey, we analyzed the stress of people who care for family members at home (family caregivers). The results showed that among family caregivers with a family doctor, those who experienced higher-quality primary care functions from their doctor had lower levels of caregiving-related stress.

People who care for family members at home (family caregivers) experience greater psychological and physical problems compared to non-caregivers. Therefore, it is important for healthcare professionals to pay attention to the stress of family caregivers. Although it has been reported that most family caregivers appreciate the psychological support from their "family doctor," no studies had previously examined whether "family doctor functions" could influence stress associated with caregiving.

Therefore, this study examined the association between family doctor functions and caregiving-related stress in family caregivers. An analysis of data from a questionnaire survey of 406 family caregivers who had a family doctor revealed that those who experienced higher-quality family doctor functions had lower levels of caregiving-related stress. Furthermore, among the elements of family doctor functions, it was shown that higher levels of continuity (receiving care based on a holistic, personal relationship) and comprehensiveness (being able to receive a wide range of care and advice when needed) were associated with lower caregiving-related stress.

There is a growing body of research showing that strengthening family doctor functions benefits local residents. The results of this study suggest that high-quality family doctor functions can also contribute to reducing the stress experienced by family caregivers. This finding is expected to serve as a valuable resource when considering how to strengthen family doctor functions and how to support family caregivers.
