Keio University
People and Ideas Connecting to Fukuzawa Yukichi and Josiah Conder
Sone & Chujo Architects, a private architectural firm established in 1908 by Tatsuzo Sone and Seiichiro Chujo, often described as the largest and best of the pre-war era, designed more than 30 buildings for Keio University, seven of which are still standing today. The firm was also responsible for the establishment of the Shinanomachi and Hiyoshi Campuses. How did the 30-year relationship between the two parties come about, and why did it last? This exhibition will introduce original design drawings by the firm that have been newly identified, along with related materials, to trace the personal connections and ideological resonance that linked the two.
