A research team led by Professor Hiromitsu Maeda of the College of Life Sciences, Ritsumeikan University, and Shinya Sugiura (who completed the latter stage of the Doctoral Programs in the Graduate School of Life Sciences in March 2023), in collaboration with Osaka University, the University of Tsukuba, and Keio University, has newly synthesized a π-electron system that exhibits light absorption in the near-infrared region. They have discovered that the dianion obtained through deprotonation shows diradical character, and that its properties are modulated by the coexisting counter-cations. The results of this research were published in the "Journal of the American Chemical Society" on March 28, 2023 (local time).
