A research team from the Keio University Hospital Memory Center, led by Project Professor Daisuke Ito of the Department of Physiology and Assistant Professor Sho Shimohama of the Division of Neurology at Keio University, has revealed that the combined use of amyloid and tau PET scans can significantly improve the diagnosis, treatment, and subsequent management of dementia.

It has been reported that with conventional clinical examinations and tests, 20–40% of dementia diagnoses are incorrect. This study found that after performing the two PET scans, approximately 35% of dementia diagnoses and 30% of treatments and management plans were changed. This suggests that the use of PET scans has the potential to significantly improve dementia care.

The results of this research were published in the online edition of the international medical journal Neurology on September 29, 2022 (PST).
