Fukuzawa Yukichi began publishing "Gakumon no susume (An Encouragement of Learning)" 150 years ago. This book, which has become a classic whose title and opening line are known to all Japanese people, not only made many people aware of the importance of learning but also inspired them to take action. This exhibition shines a light on the "Naganuma Incident," in which the people of a small village in Chiba Prefecture were directly inspired to take action by "Gakumon no susume (An Encouragement of Learning)." It explores the ideals that Fukuzawa Yukichi envisioned through his interactions with the villagers—making this country truly their own by persistently expressing dissent against the government not through force, but through words.
