On May 15, Keio 4 (July 4, 1868), in the midst of the Boshin War, while a battle between the imperial army and the Shogitai raged in Ueno and the roar of cannons echoed through the city of Edo, Yukichi Fukuzawa calmly continued his regular Saturday lecture on "The Elements of Political Economy" (1866) by Wayland* at Keio University in Shiba-Shinzenza.
At Keio University, to carry on the spirit of Yukichi Fukuzawa, who valued academic learning and education no matter what changes occurred in the world, May 15 has been designated as the "Yukichi Fukuzawa-Francis Wayland Lecture Day," and a commemorative lecture has been held annually since 1956.
This year, Professor Yoshikazu Kenjo of the Faculty of Business and Commerce, Keio University, will give a lecture titled "10 Years of Discussing the Modern Meaning of 'The People Get the Government They Deserve.'" We kindly request that you list this event in your publications and provide media coverage on the day.
*Francis Wayland (1796–1865, 4th President of Brown University, USA)
