Keio University Begins Proof-of-Concept for Next-Generation Digital Identity Platform, Issuing Certificates of Enrollment and Expected Graduation to a Smartphone App

The Keio University Information Technology Center (Director: Osamu Nakamura) and the Blockchain Laboratory of the Keio Research Institute at SFC, Keio University (Representative: Jun Murai, Deputy Representative (Technical Supervisor): Shigeya Suzuki), in collaboration with five companies—ITOCHU Techno-Solutions Corporation (President & CEO: Ichiro Tsuge), Japan Digital Design Co., Ltd. (CEO: Takashi Uehara), JCB Co., Ltd. (Chairman & CEO: Ichiro Hamakawa), Nippon Telegraph and Telephone West Corporation (President: Mitsuyoshi Kobayashi), and BlockBase, Inc. (CEO: Daiki Maki)—and in cooperation with Microsoft Corporation, will begin a proof-of-concept for a next-generation digital identity platform in October 2020. This project will issue certificates, such as Certificates of Enrollment and Certificates of Expected Graduation, to a smartphone app for Keio University students.

In response to the spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), universities are currently promoting the online delivery of classes and various administrative procedures. This has created a need for a system that allows the entire process of issuing various certificates to current students and alumni to be completed online.
