Keio University and NTT East Launch Joint Research to Solve Social Issues for Regional Revitalization Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic Using Space IoT and Systems x Design Thinking

The Keio University Graduate School of System Design and Management (hereinafter, Keio SDM) (Kohoku-ku, Yokohama; Dean: Hidekazu Nishimura) and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone East Corporation (hereinafter, NTT East) (Head Office: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Fukuzo Inoue) have launched a joint research project aimed at solving social issues to revitalize local communities in anticipation of social changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, using Space IoT and Systems x Design Thinking. Keio SDM promotes research and education in Systems x Design Thinking, which combines systems thinking for a holistic and systematic understanding of things with design thinking that leads to creation and innovation from a user-centric perspective. It also conducts practical research utilizing Space IoT, which connects various IoT devices ranging from satellites and smartphones to ultra-compact sensors. Meanwhile, NTT East builds high-speed, broadband networks that connect regions and provides secure, highly reliable communication services. At the same time, it also offers ICT services that support the digital transformation of regional customers by using digital technologies such as AI, IoT, and edge computing. In this joint research, by combining and developing the academic knowledge, advanced technologies, and assets held by both parties, we will address social issues in anticipation of the various social changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to continuous regional revitalization.
