Tokyu Corporation, East Japan Railway Company, and Tokyo Metro Co., Ltd. are promoting the development of Shibuya Scramble Square Phase I (East Building) (hereinafter "the Facility"), a large-scale complex scheduled to open in fiscal 2019.
On July 11, 2018, six parties—Shibuya Scramble Square Co., Ltd., the operator of the Facility jointly established by the three aforementioned companies; The University of Tokyo; Tokyo Institute of Technology; Keio University; Waseda University; and Tokyo City University—concluded a collaborative project agreement (hereinafter "this Agreement") for the purpose of creating and disseminating innovation and developing creative talent through industry-academia collaboration.
As part of this Agreement, the "(tentative name) Shibuya SCSQ Innovation Project" will be based at the approximately 2,600 m² industry-academia collaboration facility planned for the 15th floor of the Facility, and will collaborate with the five universities located along the train lines that converge at Shibuya Station. By combining the knowledge accumulated at the universities with the know-how of Shibuya's diverse users and private companies, the project will implement solutions in society in fields such as initiatives to solve social issues and information mobility. Through this two-way exchange with society, the project aims to fuse knowledge through new ideas that transcend technological fields, create new business models, and merge user-centric ideas with technical expertise.
Going forward, leading up to the opening of the Facility and the industry-academia collaboration facility, pre-opening events such as research presentations, project introductions, seminars, and workshops by university affiliates will be held as part of the industry-academia collaboration activities. At the same time, we will promote studies toward the realization of further open innovation in Shibuya.
