Project Assistant Professor Shinnosuke Murakami of the Keio University Institute for Advanced Biosciences (Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture; Masaru Tomita, Director) has received the 11th Research Promotion Award from The Japanese Society of Balneology, Climatology and Physical Medicine. The award ceremony was held at the 83rd Annual Meeting of The Japanese Society of Balneology, Climatology and Physical Medicine, which took place from May 19-20.

The Japanese Society of Balneology, Climatology and Physical Medicine established the Research Promotion Award in fiscal year 2008 with the aim of encouraging new research in balneology, climatology, and physical medical sciences, and promoting the society's academic research activities. To support the research of young investigators, one of the two award slots is preferentially given to a young researcher aged 45 or younger, and Project Assistant Professor Murakami received the award in this category.

The award-winning research theme is as follows.

"Elucidation of the Mechanism by which Bathing in Toyotomi Hot Springs Suppresses Atopic Dermatitis"

Toyotomi Hot Springs (Toyotomi Town, Hokkaido), where hot spring water containing oil gushes out, has been reported to improve atopic dermatitis and psoriasis through bathing. To clarify this mechanism, Project Assistant Professor Murakami, together with Project Associate Professor Kiyoshi Inoue and others at the Institute, who have a track record of research on atopic dermatitis, devised a research plan using model mice with atopic dermatitis. This plan was highly evaluated, leading to his receiving the Research Promotion Award.
