A research group led by graduate student Satoshi Yui and Professor Makoto Tsubota of the Graduate School of Science at Osaka City University, in a joint study with Professor Hiromichi Kobayashi of the Faculty of Law at Keio University, has discovered that the velocity distribution of a normal fluid is significantly deformed as quantum turbulence develops at cryogenic temperatures. The results of this research were published online in the influential physics journal "Physical Review Letters."

[Highlights of this research]

  • Successful large-scale numerical simulation of quantum turbulence, previously considered impossible

  • Quantum turbulence is realized in cryogenic fluids

  • A significant step toward unraveling the centuries-old mystery of turbulence
