A research group led by Senior Assistant Professor Kei Fujiwara and Professor Nobuhide Doi of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Keio University, has demonstrated that artificial objects (artificial cells) that mimic microbes can continuously convert compounds, similar to the fermentative production carried out by microbes. Further development of this achievement is expected to lead to the high-yield production of useful compounds (such as pharmaceuticals and biofuels) that are difficult to synthesize using conventional fermentative production methods with microbes. The details of this research were published in the online edition of the scientific journal "ACS Synthetic Biology" on December 20, 2017 (local time).
