Center Overview

In July 2011, Keio University was selected as the Sub-Regional Node (SRN) for Northeast Asia of the Asia-Pacific Adaptation Network (APAN, headquartered in Bangkok, Thailand), which is led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It is recognized as an international hub for education, research, and public awareness regarding climate change adaptation. This center is an educational and research facility within Keio established to support this role. It internationally disseminates the environmental research outcomes of Keio University, provides a platform for climate change adaptation research in the Asia-Pacific region, and, based on the Environmental Innovator Program at the Graduate School of Media and Governance, cultivates high-level environmental professionals who research and implement climate change mitigation and adaptation measures.

Fiscal Year 2015 Business Plan

■Regarding activities continuing from the previous fiscal year: background, rationale, and goals for continuation

Based on the MoU signed with the National Development Institute of Mongolia, we will jointly promote education and research on climate change adaptation.

Based on the results of the workshop held in Ulaanbaatar in February, we will support the development of Mongolia's spatial data infrastructure.

■New activity goals and content for fiscal year 2015, and background for implementation

We will continue to internationally promote educational and research activities on climate change adaptation. Additionally, we will further develop our overseas network to solidify our structure as the APAN Sub-Regional Node for Northeast Asia. Furthermore, we will leverage the established network to advance concrete joint projects with related organizations.

Fiscal Year 2014 Business Report

■Implementation details for the fiscal year's business plan, research outcomes, and degree of achievement

  • July 23: In collaboration with the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and TERI University from India, we held a joint session titled "Setting the Direction for Adaptive Development: The Urgent Need to Achieve a Sustainable Asia-Pacific" at The 6th International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (in Yokohama), where we discussed strategies and challenges for achieving adaptive development.

  • August 15–18: In cooperation with Mongolia's Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, JICA, and others, we held an international workshop titled "Resource Development and Environmental Management in Climate Change Time" in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Together with government officials, researchers, and practitioners, we discussed challenges related to Mongolia's environmental resource development and future international cooperation to address them. Following the workshop, we visited the National Development Institute of Mongolia and signed an MoU for future educational and research collaboration.

  • September 4–5: With the cooperation of the international NGO Mercy Corps, we held a training workshop titled "The Importance and Usage of Early Warning System to Prevent Disaster Risk by Using Mobile SMS Service" in various locations across Mongolia (conducted remotely from Ulaanbaatar), targeting herders and promoting the use of a climate change adaptation system via mobile phones.

  • February 11–13: Together with the National Development Institute of Mongolia and the Administration of Land Affairs, Geodesy and Cartography of Mongolia's Ministry of Construction and Urban Development, we held a training workshop titled "Technical Workshop on National Spatial Data Infrastructure for National Development Planning" in Ulaanbaatar. This was the first time that relevant organizations involved in Mongolia's spatial data development gathered together, and strategies for advancing development at the national level were also discussed.
