2010 Business Plan

■ Activities Continuing from FY2018: Background, Rationale, and Goals

Regarding the main pillars of activity at the "Center for Nursing Best Practices"—(1) "Establishment and operation of a consistent nursing education and career development system from basic education onward," (2) "Promotion of nursing practice research," (3) "Building of community and international collaborations (especially in Asia)," and (4) "Promotion of the 'Project for Improving the Quality of Medical Care' through collaboration with patients and their families"—we will promote the following two projects.

In the project "Nursing Career System Development: A Developmental Model for Generalist Nurses," which started in FY2009 as part of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) "Nursing Career System Development Plan" and is undertaken jointly with the university hospital's Department of Nursing, we will launch programs for 1. the education of generalist nurses, 2. the training of clinical instructors, 3. the development and support of diverse career paths, and 4. personnel exchange between the hospital and the faculty. We will revise these programs while verifying their effectiveness.

Additionally, we will launch a cross-departmental/graduate school project to develop a role-sharing/collaboration model for teams of medical professionals in advanced medical care based on empirical research. By integrating expertise from medical sciences, nursing, pharmacology, and informatics, each field will work together to conduct a fact-finding survey on pioneering initiatives in role-sharing/collaboration for medical professional teams, create a role-sharing/collaboration model and evaluation tools, conduct empirical research on the model's effectiveness and applicability, and develop educational programs for role-sharing/collaboration among medical professional teams. In this fiscal year, we will select specific areas and conduct a fact-finding survey through site visits and group interviews on cases where pioneering initiatives in role-sharing/collaboration are already underway. Through this survey, we will investigate the content of activities, the details and evaluation of role-sharing/collaboration, the education and training of each medical professional, practical challenges, and methods of information sharing. This will clarify the aspects where role-sharing/collaboration is functioning effectively and the factors behind it, as well as the accuracy and efficiency of communication and information-sharing networks among medical professions, and any challenges.

2009 Business Report

■ Implementation Details, Research Outcomes, and Degree of Achievement Relative to the Business Plan for the Fiscal Year

The "Center for Nursing Best Practices" was established with the aim of developing a consistent nursing education and career development system from basic education to advanced practitioner training, integrally advancing high-quality nursing practice and research through close collaboration between the Faculty of Nursing and Medical Care and the Department of Nursing at Keio University Hospital, and contributing to the development of best practices in nursing by sharing its achievements not only with Keio University Hospital but also with the broader society. The main pillars of the center's activities are: (1) "Establishment and operation of a consistent nursing education and career development system from basic education onward," (2) "Promotion of nursing practice research," (3) "Building of community and international collaborations (especially in Asia)," and (4) "Promotion of the 'Project for Improving the Quality of Medical Care' through collaboration with patients and their families."

In FY2009, activities were developed focusing on (1) and (2) above.

  1. Regarding the "Establishment and operation of a consistent nursing education and career development system from basic education onward," we applied for and were selected for the MEXT "Nursing Career System Development Plan" together with the hospital's Department of Nursing for our project titled "Nursing Career System Development: A Developmental Model for Generalist Nurses." With pillars of 1. an educational program to meticulously support the growth and development of generalist nurses as professionals, 2. a training program for clinical instructors, 3. development and support for diverse career paths, and 4. personnel exchange between the hospital and the faculty, each working group has begun developing the programs. In FY2009, as the first year of a five-year plan, we are preparing for the effectiveness measurement and investigation of each plan, including the verification of educational and instructional techniques, which is a primary role of the center.

  2. Regarding the "Promotion of nursing practice research," to form the foundation for these activities, we prepared an application for the FY2010 Strategic Research Foundation Grant Program for a project titled "Empirical Research to Strengthen the Collaborative System Foundation for Medical Professional Teams in Advanced Medical Care."
