Masatoshi Kokubo (Researcher at the Graduate School of Law, a student in the Doctoral Programs at the same graduate school, and a member of KGRI) has received the 2022 Kakuchishin Memorial Award (Encouragement Award) of the Japanese Society for Science and Technology Studies for his paper, "Constructing a Legal Theory to Accommodate the Social Implementation of Braintech."

The Kakuchishin Memorial Award (Encouragement Award) of the Japanese Society for Science and Technology Studies is presented by the Gushinkai Foundation, in cooperation with the Japanese Society for Science and Technology Studies (JSSTS), to individuals whose research on "issues of science, technology, and society" shows exceptional promise for future development.

Mr. Kokubo is conducting research on "freedom of cognitive process" from both legal and neuroscientific perspectives in KGRI's Internet of Brains-Society (IoB-S) Project and the 2040 Independence and Self-Respect Project, "Platforms and the '2040 Problem.'" In the award-winning paper, he was highly praised for his attempt to connect the concept of "freedom of cognitive process" with the actual research field, based on a systematic review of discussions in the United States and site visits to neuroscience laboratories in Japan.

We received the following comment from Mr. Kokubo on receiving the award.

"I am greatly honored to have received the prestigious Kakuchishin Memorial Award (Encouragement Award). I will continue to devote myself to my research to be worthy of this award. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the professors who have guided me, especially my academic advisors, Professor Keigo Komamura, Professor Junichi Ushiba, Professor Yasue Mitsukura, and Professor Fumihiko Kaminari, and to my family for their constant warm support."
