The controversies over standard essential patents (SEPs) have entered a new phase in 2023.
In Europe, the Unified Patent Court (UPC) was established, a new bill on SEPs was submitted by the European Commission, and the U.S. and South Korea announced their national standard strategies facing China's national strategy to become a strong nation in intellectual property. Although disputes over SEPs continued, the year 2023 was marked by the conclusion of large-scale license agreements and the settlement of lawsuits, rather than the filing of new lawsuits and court decisions.
The Keio University Intellectual Property Forum (Keio IP Forum) welcomes the SEP (Standard Essential Patent) Study Group, which is now in its 11th year of activity, and will co-host the SEP Global Workshop to review global trends surrounding SEPs.
