In July 2021, a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) on Digital Economy, Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, and Information and Communication Technology was signed between the former Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications (Japan), Ryota TAKEDA, and the Minister of Communications and Information (Singapore) H.E. Josephine TEO. The MOC will see both countries collaborate to "exchange of information on best practices and policies" and promote "mutual recognition of the importance of developing frameworks for trusted, safe and progressive use of AI, as well as the importance of international harmonization for AI governance approaches and frameworks."

Following the MOC, this roundtable was conducted to realize a dialogue between the two countries on AI governance. Attendees include the Information, Communications and Media Development Authority (IMDA), which is under the Ministry of Communications and information of Singapore, MIC, as well as leading companies in various fields from both countries. As keynote speeches, IMDA and MIC introduced guidelines on the use of AI, followed by presentations from corporates on good practices in AI governance at their companies. The roundtable was concluded with expert comments and discussions.

Throughout the roundtable, information was exchanged on the awareness of issues, the status of initiatives, and the challenges of AI governance in companies. During the discussion, the challenges of AI governance and expectations for the continuous dialogue between the two countries and between the public, private and academic sectors were discussed.
