Description:
Japan is expected to enter an era of mass death from the 2030s onward, with the annual number of deaths projected to remain between 1.5 and 1.6 million. In such a society, discussions surrounding death will likely become more active than they are today, and we will face the need to reconsider death itself. While death is a physical event, it is also inseparable from the soul. Therefore, to reconsider death is to also rethink the body and the soul.
In this symposium, Takeshi Yoro, a Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo and an anatomist who has contemplated "death" through the physical body via anatomy, will be joined by Tesshu Shaku, President of Soai University, a Buddhist monk, and a scholar of religion who has confronted "death" through religion and the soul. Together, they will discuss how perspectives on "death," "the body," and "the soul" are likely to evolve in a society of mass death, also touching on the changing views of life and death in Japan and other societies.
