Embassy of Japan / World Health Summit (Berlin), University of Cologne (Cologne) October 2018

On October 15 and 16, 2018, Professor Masato Yasui and Senior Assistant Professor Yasumichi Arai of the Keio University School of Medicine and Keio University Project Professor Hiroki Nakatani visited venues in Berlin and Cologne as part of a research caravan.

A lecture meet by Keio School of Medicine was held at the Embassy of Japan in Berlin, Germany, and the caravan members attended a dinner reception hosted by embassy envoys.

The following day they participated in the World Health Summit. At this summit, globally-relevant health topics such as disease pandemics, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), access to medicines, health systems, multidrug-resistant bacteria, and revolutions in medical informatics were taken up in a general and wide-ranging manner. More than 2,500 actors from the public and private sector attended, with a focus on those from countries which receive bilateral aid from Germany.

Following this, the caravan transferred to Cologne for a visit to the University of Cologne. They held meetings to confirm final details on joint distance learning classes for graduate students of both universities and discuss a second joint symposium to be held at Keio in 2019 and the forthcoming framework for joint research.

Many Japanese residents of Berlin attended the medical lectures held at the Embassy of Japan, and by foregrounding Keio's international activities it was possible to get a measure of their high level of interest.

At the University of Cologne, alongside meetings on joint distance learning between our institutions, a specific opinion exchange on the joint symposium to be held next year was held, and an extremely constructive and fruitful information exchange on mutual activities planned for after the symposium was achieved.
