On the afternoon of March 6, 2018 Toshihiro Nakayama (Professor, Faculty of Policy Management) and Michito Tsuruoka (Associate Professor, Faculty of Policy Management) visited the Atlantic Council.
Professor Nakayama gave a presentation on Japan-US relations from the era of democratic administrations in Japan through to the Trump administration of today, while Associate Professor Tsuruoka presented on and compared the shared challenges and points of difference on European and Asian relations with Russia, China, and the United States.
Following this, there were discussions on cybersecurity, with the need for informational cooperation between the US and Japan recognized. Furthermore, there was mutual recognition that the US-Japan alliance should target cooperation over the wider region of the Indo-Pacific rather than just China.
In addition, there was an exchange of opinions on Russia and discussion of the One Belt, One Road Chinese development strategy, as well as Chinese authoritarianism and Chinese AI strategy.
It was agreed to continue to create further opportunities for mutual exchanges of opinions going forward.
