At the general meeting of the 34th Annual Meeting of the Japan Academy of Nursing Science, held at the Nagoya Congress Center on Saturday, November 29, Senior Assistant Professor Sachiyo Nakamura was awarded the "13th Japan Academy of Nursing Science Award for Excellence in a Scientific Paper."

Comments from Senior Assistant Professor Sachiyo Nakamura

I would like to once again express my sincere gratitude to all the participants and facilities that cooperated with this research.

The award-winning paper is a study that analyzes the relationship between uterine inertia, prolonged labor, and "hiesho" (cold sensitivity), which are abnormalities during childbirth with little evidence. This research is an extension of my doctoral dissertation.

This study suggests that having hiesho doubles the incidence of uterine inertia and increases the rate of prolonged labor by approximately 2.3 times. Therefore, cold sensitivity is not merely a "personal disposition" but a "symptom" that should be taken seriously. However, while hiesho is considered a problem in the field of midwifery, there is a lack of evidence, and current practices are based on empirical knowledge. Although my contribution may be small, I will continue to strive to contribute to the evidence base for hiesho.

Finally, I would like to dedicate this award to my great mentor, the late Professor Haruo Yanai of St. Luke's College of Nursing (now St. Luke's International University), who passed away last year and guided me in adjusting for confounding factors using propensity scores. This award would not have been possible without the support of many people. Thank you very much.
