On February 21, 2023, a delegation of four, led by Professor Annika Östman Wernerson, the President-elect of Karolinska Institutet, visited the Keio University School of Medicine and Keio University Hospital. Karolinska Institutet, founded in 1810, is Sweden's largest research and educational institution. It is home to the committee that selects the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine and is renowned for its high level of research and education. The Keio University School of Medicine signed an agreement with Karolinska Institutet in 2017, and the two institutions actively engage in joint research and student exchange programs.

President Kohei Itoh, along with Vice-President Yuko Kitagawa, Vice-President Masayuki Amagai, Dean Takanori Kanai of the School of Medicine, and Vice Dean Yasue Kanai of the School of Medicine, welcomed the President-elect and her delegation. They shared information and exchanged views on the current state of research, education, and medical care at both universities. The subsequent campus tour included laboratory introductions by Professor Masato Yasui (Department of Pharmacology) and Professor Hideyuki Okano (Department of Physiology), a simulation of the "upright CT scanner" by Vice Hospital Director Masahiro Jinzaki (Professor of radiography), and an introduction to the hospital's AI hospital functions, all of which helped to foster goodwill between the two institutions.
