On Saturday, June 5, 2021, the Keio Medical Alliance Fellowship Program General Information Session (Keio Open Hospital 2021), an event for junior residents and medical students, was held online.

Every June, Keio University Hospital holds "Keio Open Hospital," a general information session on specialist training in fundamental clinical departments. The event aims to give participants a firsthand feel for the atmosphere of the Keio Medical Alliance (KMA), which boasts one of the largest networks of affiliated hospitals in Japan. However, due to the ongoing nationwide spread of COVID-19, we unfortunately had to cancel the regular in-person event for 2021, as we did last year, and hold it online instead. The event featured live online information and Q&A sessions conducted via WebEx and Zoom by various clinical departments and affiliated hospitals of Keio University School of Medicine and Hospital. Nineteen of our hospital's clinical divisions and 17 affiliated hospitals, which offer specialist and junior residency training programs, participated, with 262 registered attendees (162 from other universities and hospitals).

This was the sixth time Keio Open Hospital has been held, and satisfaction ratings from the participant survey were high again this year. We plan to continue holding the event in the future. Here are some comments from the participants.

  • With hospital tours being difficult, it was a very meaningful time to be able to hear from several hospitals online.

  • I was able to get a concrete idea of the career paths and work styles in the clinical departments I'm interested in.

  • The doctors carefully explained the training system and the characteristics of each clinical department, which gave me a feel for the hospital's atmosphere.

  • The environment made it easy to ask questions, so it was a very substantive session, and I was able to learn a lot.

  • I was very satisfied that I could participate in information sessions for multiple affiliated hospitals.

  • It was very helpful to understand how to obtain specialist certification at Keio University.

  • Because it was online, multiple people were participating, and it was great to hear questions that I wouldn't have thought of myself.

  • It was great that there was plenty of time set aside for direct questions and that they were answered individually.

  • Thank you for all your creative efforts for students during this difficult time.

  • It was also helpful to hear about the third year and beyond, which was very useful for choosing my career path.

  • It was great that doctors from various clinical departments clearly explained the hospital's strengths and shared their personal experiences.

  • It was very helpful that the doctors explained in detail the path for residents and beyond in the clinical department I hope to join in the future.

  • It was great to be able to move between rooms and hear from many different doctors. It really boosted my motivation.

  • It was very informative to be able to see the faces of the doctors and residents while listening to them speak.

  • There was ample time for both the slide presentation and the Q&A session, which allowed me to gain a deep understanding of the training content and life as a resident.

  • Hearing the doctors explain the program based on their specialized training gave me a concrete understanding of the paths available after becoming a resident.

  • I couldn't do hospital tours because of COVID-19, so it was great to have the opportunity to learn about multiple hospitals online. I participated without a full understanding of the specialist system, but it was very educational to be able to hear about it even as a medical student.

  • As an online information session, it was very easy to participate even from far away, and I was happy to be able to hear directly from the doctors.
