On Saturday, June 13, 2020, we held the "KEIO MEDICAL ALLIANCE FELLOWSHIP Web Information Session: Keio Open Hospital 2020," an event for junior residents and School of Medicine students.

Every June, Keio University Hospital holds "Keio Open Hospital," a general information session on specialist training in basic clinical departments, with the aim of giving participants a firsthand feel for the atmosphere of the Keio Medical Alliance (KMA), which boasts the largest group of affiliated hospitals in Japan. However, considering the current situation with the COVID-19 pandemic, which has spread nationwide with no end in sight, this year's event was held online.

The event was held in a format where each clinical department of Keio University School of Medicine and Hospital and its affiliated hospitals conducted live information sessions and Q&A sessions online using WebEx and Zoom. Nineteen of our hospital's clinical departments and 15 affiliated hospitals, which offer specialist and junior residency programs, participated, with 219 registered attendees (118 of whom were from other universities and hospitals).

This was the fifth time Keio Open Hospital has been held, and this year again, the participant survey showed a high level of satisfaction. We plan to continue holding this event in the future. Here are some comments from the participant survey.

  • Since it is a difficult time to visit hospitals, I was grateful to be able to receive an explanation about the hospital.

  • It was also great to be able to hear from the junior residents.

  • I was able to get a feel for the hospital's atmosphere by actually talking with the doctors.

  • I was very satisfied that I could attend information sessions for multiple affiliated hospitals.

  • It was very helpful to understand how to obtain a specialist certification at Keio University.

  • Because it was online, multiple people were participating, and it was great to hear questions that I would never have thought of myself.

  • Thank you for all your creative efforts for the students during such a difficult time.

  • It was also helpful to hear about the third year and beyond, which was very useful for choosing my career path.

  • It was very informative to have the doctors explain in detail the process after becoming a resident in the clinical department I hope to join in the future.

  • There was ample time for the slide presentation and Q&A, allowing me to gain a deep understanding of the training content and life as a resident.

  • I didn't know anything about the specialist system and wanted to get a feel for the atmosphere and the general process, so I'm glad I could participate. It was great to hear from and listen to the questions of residents, specialists, and senior medical students who are looking for junior residency placements.

  • It was a meaningful time that greatly boosted my motivation to aim for my desired clinical department.

  • Due to COVID-19, I couldn't visit hospitals and couldn't form a concrete image of my future, so I was glad to have the opportunity to hear an explanation about the hospital. It was also great that even as a School of Medicine student, I could ask about specialist training, and my questions were answered politely.

  • As an online information session, it was very easy to participate even from far away, and I am happy that I could hear directly from the doctors.

Finally, details of the 2021 Keio University School of Medicine fellowship recruitment will be announced on the following website as soon as they are finalized. Please check it for updates.
